Dogs for Diabetics, Inc. (D4D) offers wonderful opportunities for individuals or organizations to make a difference by sponsoring a specific part of its program to assist in carrying out its mission.
Sponsors can provide the financial support to develop a new client/dog team, or subsidize the cost of training a new dog or new client.
We have a strong desire to raise a research fund to build a greater understanding of the way these dogs work and measure their impact on their human companions.
Lastly, we would like to establish a fund to expand our program across the U.S.and the World.
Post Graduate Sponsorship
D4D has developed a post-graduate support program, which includes monthly training sessions for all its graduates at the Nylabone D4D Training Center in Concord,CA. We have also established remote support groups across Northern California and Washington. Annually, all client/dog teams undergo a recertification process, which includes pre-certification reports, a day of classroom and field work, as well as personal follow up training as needed. Our costs to provide this continuing support approximates $500 per team annually. D4D will acknowledge a $500 donation for this purpose as supporting its Post Graduate Program.
Veterinary Fund Sponsorship
One of D4D’s major expense categories is veterinary costs. The money needed varies every month. The vets we use offer significantly discounted services, but we have additional costs for medication and special services. We currently allocate $1,000 per dog in training as part of our reserves for operating costs. Your support of a $1,000 donation to the Veterinary Fund will benefit our dogs in training. Your donation will be acknowledged as a contribution to be used for this program activity. One of D4D’s objectives is to develop a designated Veterinary Reserve Fund of $25,000 to $50,000.
Dog Training Sponsorship
D4D costs associated with training and supporting our dogs through the initial scent training program approximate $12,000. The training process takes 4 to 6 months. This includes the all direct costs of training prior to placement. It incorporates our support of the homes that finish the training by working with a trained diabetic handler. With this sponsorship, D4D will designate a specific dog and acknowledge that sponsorship by the donating party.
Client Training Sponsorship
Our clients receive over 130 hours of classroom and field training prior to placement. After placement, they begin a process of daily charting hypoglycemic events and dog alerts, providing weekly reports to D4D’s training staff. They receive personal coaching to assist in achieving the targeted level of accurate alerts for a minimum of 3 months. They continue to participate in monthly support classes. This coaching continues until the team reaches the targeted 80% level of alerts qualifying for graduation.
It costs D4D approximately $8,000 per client to provide this level of support. Your donation for this sponsorship can be allocated to a specific client, chosen by D4D, and be acknowledged with an attribution to the donating party.
It costs D4D approximately $20,000 to train a dog and client during the first year of placement. The details of these costs are noted above. Your donation of this amount can be designated to a specific client/dog team that will be selected by D4D and acknowledged as sponsored by the donating individual or organization.
Research Fund Sponsorship
D4D is interested in developing a Research Fund to pay the costs of developing various research projects as well as funding the costs associated with the outside research organization. We are targeting a $25,000 to 50,000 fund to pay for an initial study to have an independent research group validate the dogs capabilities to identify and alert on the changing blood sugar levels of a client, in a controlled environment.
This fund will be set up as a separate resource from our general operating funds, with the use of the funds restricted for the work to be done by the study. Some of the funds will pay D4D operating costs that are specifically associated with the study. We will increase the fund goals as we move forward. Donors providing these resources will be acknowledged as supporting this important effort.
Expansion Fund Sponsorship
D4D’s vision for the future includes expanding our mission to provide trained medical alert dogs for insulin dependent diabetics across the United States and the world. In order to develop this opportunity, additional professional trainers are needed, as well as a professional development director to assist in raising the needed funds. One of our expansion objectives is to work with other accredited service dog providers to assist them in the development of a program consistent with D4D’s standards within their service areas.
To begin this activity, D4D is targeting a fundraising goal of a $200,000 Expansion Fund. This fund will be used to hire additional staff to begin the work to develop an expansion program. This initial goal was reached in our fiscal year ended June 30, 2014.
A future Expansion Fund goal is $1,000,000 to $5,000,000 to set up programs that will provide dogs beyond our current service area, and develop a program that supports the diabetic community across theUnited States and beyond.
D4D’s leadership team welcomes the opportunity to work with individuals or organizations that have the resources to assist in this effort.
