Dear Mr. Ruefenacht,
Our 36 year old son, Ryan Rank, passed away on January 13, 2013 after having Type 1 Diabetes since he was 6 years old. During the early morning hours of December 23rd, he fell down the steps of his apartment trying to get help for a low blood sugar of 22, and suffered a traumatic brain injury. I am enclosing a check to D4D as a memorial to Ryan.
Ryan was a brittle diabetic and struggled many years with both the physical, mental and emotional issues that many juvenile diabetics must contend with. He would have greatly benefited from a diabetic alert dog if they would have been available. He loved all animals and they loved him. He would be very pleased to know his memorial funds were being used to help another young person get an alert dog.
We live in central Iowa and we were trying to find an organization closer to home for this donation. However, I chose Dogs4Diabetics for several reasons:
- You provide dogs at no or little cost
- You encourage volunteerism
- Your willingness to “get the word out” about diabetic alert dogs
- Continued follow up training with the recipients
My husband and do a lot of volunteering through our church and local homeless shelter and if we lived closer we would be more than happy to volunteer for Dogs4Diabetics. We both feel this is a worthy way to honor our son and his life.
