In August of 2007, I was placed with my D4D dog, Rochelle. As a competitive gymnast, my blood sugars drop frequently and very fast. Ever since I was placed with Rochelle, I have gotten my independence back. She has saved my life too many times to count.
One of my favorite alerts from her was when I was at a Cross-training gym. The gym door was opened halfway. Rochelle was in the car, with the windows cracked, in the parking lot with my mom. Rochelle alerted by whining and let my mom know something was wrong. My mom and Rochelle walked into the gym – Rochelle pulling her towards me – and I checked my blood sugar. It had gone from being 260 to 54 in ten minutes. However, because I have hypoglycemic unawareness, I felt completely fine. If Rochelle hadn’t alerted, I would have been in a very dangerous situation.
Not only is Rochelle an amazing help for my diabetes, she is my best friend and my gymnastics’ team mascot!
